Does Invisalign Hurt, and How Long Does It Really Take?

Not in the way braces can. Each new aligner brings mild pressure or tenderness for one to three days as teeth begin to move, then it fades. There are no brackets or wires to cut your cheeks, so most people describe it as an ache when biting, not a sharp or constant pain.

The soreness is a good sign. It means the tray is applying the gentle, steady force that shifts teeth. Because each aligner moves teeth only a small amount, the discomfort is modest and predictable, and it lessens with every set as your mouth adapts.

Compared with braces, Invisalign is usually kinder to the soft tissue. Braces have metal edges that rub the inside of the lips and cheeks; smooth aligner plastic rarely does. If an aligner edge ever feels rough, we can smooth it in minutes.

Most first-day tenderness responds to simple measures: an over-the-counter pain reliever, cold water, and giving new trays a day to settle. Changing to a new aligner at bedtime means the tightest hours pass while you sleep. Gently biting a soft aligner chewie also helps trays seat fully.

   Switch trays at night

   Start each new aligner before bed. You sleep through the first and tightest hours, and by morning the sharpest edge of the pressure has already passed.

   Use simple relief

   An over-the-counter pain reliever handles the occasional tender day. Cold water and cooler foods soothe the ache; very hot drinks can make new trays feel more sensitive.

   Seat trays with chewies

   Gently biting on a soft aligner chewie for a few minutes helps each tray settle fully onto the teeth, which improves both comfort and tracking.

Most Invisalign treatments run 6 to 18 months. Simple cases, such as minor crowding or a small relapse after childhood braces, can finish in around six months. Comprehensive cases that also correct the bite tend toward the longer end. Your projected timeline is estimated from your scan before you start.

The range is wide because cases are. The number of aligners, and therefore the months, depends on how far your teeth need to travel. A scan lets your dentist estimate the timeline honestly up front, rather than leaving it open-ended.

This is also why we are cautious about promises of a fixed, very short treatment. Rushing biology tends to cause tracking problems and refinements. A realistic plan finished on schedule beats an optimistic one that runs over.

Three things: complexity, wear compliance, and refinements. Complexity sets the baseline number of aligners. Wearing the trays 20 to 22 hours a day keeps you on that schedule. Refinements, the extra aligners some cases need at the end, add a few weeks when teeth require fine-tuning.

Wear time is the one factor entirely in your hands. Aligners left out too long stall progress and can add refinement rounds, which is the most common reason a treatment runs past its estimate. Consistent wear is the surest way to finish on time.

Refinements are normal, not a setback. Roughly a third to half of cases use them to perfect the final positions. At Zen they are part of the original fee, so needing them does not change your cost, only add a short stretch to the calendar.
